Adolescent Dating Abuse is a pattern of behavior used to control and intimidate an adolescent partner. It can happen to adolescents at any age, no matter their level of education or economic background. Dating Violence can be present across relationships of all sexual orientations with current or former partners. Unhealthy and abusive relationships can also occur in friendships.
Each year, 10 million kids are exposed to domestic violence and one in three young people Between the ages of 11 to 24 are in an abusive or unhealthy relationship. Also, 33% of adolescents in America are victim to sexual, physical, verbal, or emotional dating abuse.
Similar to adult domestic violence, adolescent dating violence is about one adolescent using abuse to gain power and control over another in an intimate relationship.
Adolescent dating violence includes: physical, psychological/mental, sexual, verbal, spiritual, and cyber/digital.
Teen dating violence creates countless issues for adolescents including: depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, teen pregnancy, and more.
Remember, adolescent dating violence is about a pattern of abuse. The abuse is consistent and constant. It will not begin with a punch, slap, or a kick. It will begin with words.
